St Michael’s Church Wollombi

The foundation stone of this historic church was laid in September 1840 by Reverend John Bede Polding, the first Bishop of Sydney.  Nearly 165 years later, in May 2005, Margaret Ella was commissioned to design and create the lead light windows that now adorn the church.

The six windows in the main body of the church form a series based on the first chapter of Genesis, and celebrate “the story of creation of heaven and earth”.

“On reading these passages the division into days provided the structural themes and the images arose almost instantaneously.”  Margaret Ella

Much of the very distinctive glass has been sourced from Germany, France and America.
